K1K ownership gives you automatic god status amongst head-fiers. What are you powering them with?
As for etherlite’s comment, not many amps swing enough current at the the K701′s 62 ohm impedance to really do them justice. The low sensitivity makes it even worse, but if you have a very high power and transparent amp they sound pretty amazing.
I’ve owned mine since long, long before they were called Mio phones and have found they continue to improve as you put better gear behind them. Currently running them off a 3 watt per channel tube amp with great results.
No, I tried it with RSA Emmeline The DarkStar, and it still sounds bad. I dare you to say that DarkStar wasn’t powerful enough, as it managed to drive balanced-out LCD2 rev.1, Senn HD800 & 4-pin balanced HiFiman HE-6 at the same time.
Forgot to try it with Woo Audio WA6 though, but I’ve missed the chance. The only dead stock of AKG K701 at the store I’m working on just sold it last Saturday
And to those who think that K1000 doesn’t seem to be comfortable: You need to try it first. It sits comfortably on your head, not even covering your ears, yet it sounds like a closed headphone.
@etherlite: indeed, the dark star is powerful enough to blow up most headphones, no trouble with power there. Perhaps it is just a matter of finding exactly the right amount of HF rolloff to tame their etched sounding top end without making things sound dull. It’s a delicate balance for sure.
FWIW I used to power my K701 with a WA6 (recently sold) and the combo did well with the right tubes. The WA6 felt like it was just barely powerful enough, but it sounded open and balanced at its best. My current amp is a lot more powerful and takes the detail up another notch without sounding harsh still so I can’t say anything bad about my personal pair of K701s.

What etherlite said. The K1000s look very uncomfortable, but in fact, they are the opposite.
AKG K-701 = Epic Win. Quite heavy but the sound quality is awesome.
